FROM THE LOS ANGELES TIMES, Oct. 3, 1938
"Bud Minyard, 26 year-old race driver, was killed at Southern Ascot Speedway yesterday when the 1926 Jewett he was driving blew a tire on the ninety-six twirl of the 100-lap Jalopy Derby, turned over, threw him out and rolled over on him. Minyard's chest was crushed and he died in an ambulance en route to a hospital.
Minyard finished ninth in the 500-mile dirt track race held at Oakland last week. He was a veteran driver, having appeared behind the wheel of racing cars for seven years."

FROM THE OAKLAND TRIBUNE, Tues. Oct.4,1938 p. 32D - COLUMN ON SECOND THOUGHT - Death Takes No Holiday
"Bud Minyard was blasted out the hard way Sunday at Southgate.
The young auto driver, who has run the Oakland Speedway track on several occasions and was a starter in the recent 500-mile race here, was killed in a "jallopy" contest. The ancient car he was piloting blew a tire, turned over, and when Bud was pulled from the wreckage he was dead.
In the past I have contended, and will continue to repeat, auto racing is not as hazardous as generally believed so long as a good driver is operating a good car.
I still insist I am correct in my arbitrary stand. Minyard was a good driver...but he was tooling a machine which should not have been permitted on a race track."

FROM THE MIDDLETOWN TIMES HERALD, MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. Sat.Oct. 15, 1938, pg. 9 Auto Racing Results:
"Death visited the Southern Ascot Speedway in California for the second time in its two-and-one-half year history when the life of Bud Minyard,twenty-five year old veteran of Western speedways, was taken over the last hill by the grim reaper during the running of the 100-lap jaloppy Derby. Minyard was piloting his '25 Jewett at a fast clip when he blew a tire on the ninety-sixth lap. The car rolled over twice and Minyard received chest injuries which caused death."

FROM THE LOS ANGELES TIMES, Oct. 5, 1938
