John never married. He lived at home on the farm until his mother moved to Pontiac with her youngest daughter, Ann, in the early to middle 1930s. He stayed in Maple River and worked for different farmers throughout the area.
Around the time World War II began, John came to Pontiac to find work and lived with his sister, Marie & Ralph Gix. He got a job at Pontiac Motors and worked in the foundry. He was well liked at work and never complained about the long, hard hours. He worked there until the end of the war.
John bought a small house in Brutus, (Emmet County) Michigan, but only lived there a short time before died. He suffered a stroke and was found in his yard. He was taken to the hospital in Petoskey, (Emmet County) Michigan, where he died a couple days later on October 9, 1958. He is buried in the Maple River Township Cemetery in Maple River Twp, Michigan.
