Albert Franklyn Howland::;

He was born at Little Compton, Newport, Rhode Island, on 27th of June, 1843.

Captain Albert Franklyn Howland married Miss Emma Harvey Hallett on the 1st Day of January, 1874.

He died at apoplexy, during the night, Acushnet, Bristol County, Massachusetts on 27th of August 1907.

He was a resident of Acushnet and was a US Union Civil War veteran who had spent nearly a year in a Confederate prison. Upon moving to Acushnet, he became active in the community, serving on the school committee and on other committees. In 1888 he was elected a state senator. He is best known as a local historian, whose book "A History of the Town of Acushnet" was published shortly after his death.

South Bristol Farmers' Club was organized in A.D. 1882 by Captain Albert Franklyn Howland, which was incorporated in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 1894. S.B. F.C. constitution states that its purpose was to be "the promotion of agriculture and horticulture by frequent meetings for the discussion of these subjects." As the club grew so did its purpose "to associate farmers together for the purpose of improvement in farming knowledge by means of discussions, lectures, and fairs and for social purposes and for the establishment and maintenance of a place for reading room and social meetings." The members would meet twice a month for an entire day.

Women were allowed to join the club as equals and, in 1887, they held the first Woman's Day where the program was arranged and executed by women. The club was very successful, it wasn't disbanded until 1982, on its one hundredth anniversary.
