He was the son of Frederick Hess (1785-1851) and Maria Polly Skinner (1833-1890).

Remsen, Dec 26. — After several months of sickness, Adam Hess died Tuesday morning at 4:15 o'clock. He was aged 75 years, 4 months and 15 days.
He enlisted during the war of the rebellion in Company C, 81st Regiment, New York Volunteers.
At the time he was taken ill he was mail carrier between the post office here and the depot, and he performed his duties as such well.
He was twice married. The first wife was a Miss Peters, residing at Russia, NY, from which union there is now living one son, A. P. Hess. His second wife was Helen J. Cummings, a sister of Mrs. R. H. Wiggins. By her survives one daughter, Miss Margaret Hess, who has lately kept house for her father.
Mr. Hess was a member of the M. E. Church here for many years.
He was a quiet and unassuming person, had many friends and was a member of Post Thomas, G . A .R , of Prospect.
The funeral services were held at his late residence this morning at 9:30 o'clock. Interment was made at Ohio, Herkimer county. Rome Daily Sentinel, Thursday Evening, December 26, 1901
