MRS. BROWN CELEBRATES 87th BIRTHDAY
Friday, January 27 was a very memorable day for Mrs. Minnie Brown as she celebrated her 87th birth date anniversary at her home on Beech street. Among, her collection of greeting cards were several from old friends in Lenawee county where she was born in 1869. She also received gilts that will add much to her comfort and pleasure in the room where she cautiously moves herself from her bed to chair.

Mrs. Brown greatly appreciated the calls and visits with her children, grandchildren, and friends during the afternoon and evening.

Mrs. Minnie Porter Brown has been a faithful Christian since her early girlhood, and in the pioneer days of Fairfield, township she assisted her father who assumed the role of church janitor. In those days the duties involved hours to make the congregations comfortable in edifices heated with wood burning stoves and lighted by kerosene lamps.

She became Mrs. John T. Brown in 1892 and the couple continued as loyal witnesses in home and community life spent in Lenawee, and Isabella counties, also in Big Rapids, where they resided before coming to Clare in the late 1920’s.

Mrs. Brown is never known to be idle as the large number of pieced quilts in use in her family Circle and by friends are evidence of her busy hands.

Her flower garden was also a hobby and now her room is seldom without a blossom brought there by those who remember.

This beloved lady of eighty-seven years is made comfortable in her home by her son, Lawrence and only sister, Mrs.Olive Covell, also, by frequent calls from her family and friends. (The Clare Sentinel, p. 5 - Clare, MI - 2 February 1956)

MRS. J.T.BROWN DEATH MOURNED

Monday morning at 3:50 o’ clock, Mrs. Minnie Brown passed from this life at her home on Beech street where she had been attentively cared for by her family and sister, Mrs. Olive Covell for several months.

Minnie Porter was born the daughter of Walter and Susan Porter, January 27, 1869 in Fairfield township, Lenawee county, Michigan.

As a young girl she began attending the Baptist Church located near her home. She cherished the opportunity to assist her father as caretaker of the church building, and her portion was keeping the kerosene lamps polished and filled. The building was later moved to Weston where she found pleasure in attending worship services upon visits in later years.

July 2, 1892 she was united in marriage with John Ten Bropk Brown of the same locality. They remained in this community until 1901 when they moved north to Isabella county locating near Rosebush.

They resided in several rural locations in Isabella and Clare counties, also in Big Rapids and Evart before taking up permanent residence in Clare in the late 1920’s.

Mr. Brown preceded her In death in 1930, and a daughter, Mrs. Susan Foell in 1953.

The family of four sons and one daughter: Ralph P. of rural Clare; Walter of Saskatchewan, Canada; George W. of Cowallis Oregon; Lawrence with whom she made her home; and Mrs. Hazel Foss, of Glare; 24 grandchildren and 43 great grandchildren, survives.

A sister, Mrs. Olive Covell, formerly of Lenawee county who has aided in the home and her care for about two years, other relatives and friends who highly regarded her friendship and esteemed her as Mother Brown, will also cherish memories of her.

Mrs. Brown was an active member of the First Baptist Church during the many years spent in this area. Funeral rites were conducted from that church Wednesday afternoon, with Rev. Gerrit Schut officiating. Burial was in Cherry Grove cemetery beside her husband. Six grandsons acted as pall-bearers. Mrs. Brown was at the Thurston Chapel until the appointed hour.(The Clare Sentinel, p. 8 - Clare, MI - 8 November 1956)
