Daughter of John T. Mitchell and Eliza Jane Stuart, wife of Theodore Ebenezer Jewell, whom she married on May 9, 1844, in Rochester, New York, and mother of Herbert Stuart, Edward Mitchell, George Spencer, Sarah Elizabeth (died young), Theodore Dwight (died young), and Florence Adelaide Jewell (married Charles Deming Marvin). Sister of John T. and Margaret Ann Mitchell.

In 1850, Eliza J. Jewell, aged 29, was living in Seneca, Ontario, New York, with her husband, Theodore Jewell, aged 29, and children, Herbert S. Jewell, aged 5, Edward M. Jewell, aged 4, and George S. Jewell, aged 1, with Margaret Mitchell, aged 31, and Emaly Labey, aged 15. Her husband was shown to be a machinist.

In 1880, Eliza J. Jewell, aged 59, widowed, was living in Jamesport, Suffolk, New York, with her daughter, Florence A. Jewell, aged 18. Living with her were Robert Blake, aged 29, and Elizabeth Blake, aged 29, who were both shown to be servants.

Obituary - Eliza J. Jewell, widow of the late Theodore E. Jewell, died early this morning. The funeral will be held from the residence of her son, Herbert S. Jewell, at 78 Halsey Street, at 2 p.m. tomorrow. Mrs. Jewell was in the 80th year of her age. She was taken ill recently and failed rapidly. She was well known for her numerous charitable acts and gained the love and respect of all those with whom she came in contact.

Death Record - Eliza Jane Jewell, aged 79, widowed, residing at 43 Putnam Ave., Brooklyn, New York, born about 1821 in Rochester, New York, the daughter of John Mitchell, both parents born in Scotland, died on November 20, 1900 New York City, Brooklyn, New York, of Valvular Heart Disease, Uraemia, and was buried on November 23, 1900 in Greenwood Cemetery.

Estate - In the Name of God, Amen, I, Eliza J. Jewell, of Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, being of sound and disposing mind and memory, and considering the uncertainty of this life do make, publish and declare this to be my last Will and Testament as follows:
First, after my lawful debts are paid, I give and bequeath to my daughter Florence A. Marvin all clothing, jewelry, silver ware, furniture, books, paintings, crockery, and household effects of which I may died seized, for her sole use and benefit.
Second, All the rest, residue and remainder of my estate, real, personal or mixed, of which I may died seized or possessed, I give, devise and bequeath to the Brooklyn Trust Company, of Brooklyn, IN TRUST, for the following purposes to wit:
A - I direct said Trust Company to so care for, collect, invest or re-invest, all such property as to get a fair income therefrom, and to pay over to my said daughter, Florence A. Marvin, the income from such estate for her sole use and benefit, such payments to be made from time to time as money may be collected.
B - Upon the decease of said Florence A. Marvin, the principal shall be divided by said Trustee, share and share alike, among my grandchildren, and in case of the death of any grandchild who is now living, or who may be born before my decease, the share of such deceased grandchild shall be paid to its legal representative or representatives.
Third, I direct that my Trustees and Executor (The Brooklyn Trust Company) shall confer with my son, Herbert S. Jewell, as to the investment of funds of my estate, and other matters pertaining thereto, and in so far as consistent to accept his advice as to the disposition of the funds in accordance with the terms hereof.
I hereby appoint The Brooklyn Trust Company of the City of Brooklyn to be trustee to the Executor of this my last Will and Testament: hereby revoking all former Wills by me made.
In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name, and affixed my seal, the Eleventh day of January, in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred ninety-six.
