"GUSSIE" AUGUSTA GERTRUDE CAIN BURBACH

Mrs. Augusta (Gussie) Gertrude Burbach was born the fifth child of six children to Daniel Frawley and Alice Jane Hannagan Cain on February 16, 1896 at Republican City, NE. She departed this life Saturday, January 19, 1991, at the Colonial Villa Good Samaritan Center in Alma, NE at the age of 94 years, eleven months and three days. "Gussie," as all of her friends and relatives came to know her, grew to womanhood in the Republican City community where she also attended school. She graduated from high school with the class of 1912. She later attended the Art Institute in Chicago.

On April 14, 1926, Gussie was united in marriage to Erasmus Joseph "Ray" Burbach at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Alma, NE. To this union five children were born, Robert, who passed away at birth, John Vincent, Zita Jean, Mary Jane and Daniel James.

The family resided in Harlan County, NE until 1941 when they moved to Almena, KS, where they operated grocery businesses. Gussie later worked at the Tuberculosis Sanatorium near Norton, KS. Retiring in 1964, she and "Ray" moved to Alma, NE. In 1969 they moved to Colby, KS. and in February of 1975, Gussie became a resident of the Meadow Lark Manor in Colby, KS. Gussie and Ray celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in April of 1976 while residing in Colby. "Ray" preceded "Gussie" in death on June 9, 1976. She had been a resident of the Colonial Villa Good Samaritan Center in Alma since June 15, 1979. "Gussie" was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and Altar Society of Alma. She was a member of the Paul D. Linnell American Legion Auxiliary at Almena, KS.

In addition to her infant son and late husband, Gussie was preceded in death by her father in 1927, her mother in 1945; two brothers, Vincent and Francis; and two sisters, both nuns, Mother Vincent Cain and Mother Zita Cain. She leaves to mourn her passing two sons, John "Jack" Burbach and wife Hilde of Salina, KS., and Daniel Burbach and wife Judy of Maple Hill, KS.; two daughters, Zita Jean Fisher of Loveland, CO, and Mary Jane Van Patten and husband David of rural Almena, KS.; nine grandchildren and stepgrandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one brother, Anthony Cain, Scottsdale, AZ, other relatives and many friends. Gussie was a loving Christian wife, mother and neighbor and was loved by all who knew her. Memorials may be left with the family and will be given to the Colonial Villa Good Samaritan Center in Alma.

A Rosary service was held Monday, January 21, at 7:30 p.m. at Banta-Torrey Funeral Home, Alma, Mass of the Christian Burial was celebrated Tuesday, January 22, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Alma, with Father Pat Murphy as the celebrant. Music was provided by Mrs. Cecilia Morin, organist and vocalist, Mrs. Ellen Medinger, vocalist, St. Joseph's Choir and congregational singing. Pallbearers were Christopher Burbach, James Burbach, Michael Burbach, Nicholas Burbach, Anthony Van Patten, Benjamin Van Patten, Mark Van Patten and Mathew Van Patten. Interment was in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery at Alma, NE. Banta-Torrey Funeral Home, Alma, had charge of arrangements.
