Volinda was the 4th child born to William and Rachel T. Shaw Mitten. She was born between 1848-1850 in Indiana. She married John T. Sheffler August 30, 1871 in Clinton County, Indiana with Rev. John C. Campbell officiating. John was born about 1847 in Pennsylvania. John and Volinda had three children; Pearl, Blanche and Mabel.
OBIT:
ROSSVILLE, Ind -- Again death has taken a kind friend, a devoted wife, a tender mother. Jennie, wife of John Sheffler died March 3rd, of Consumption. Survived her dear sister - Mrs. Short, 8 days. They were pleasant in their lives and have sweet memories in our hearts. Oh! death is thus taking our loved ones here there. Robbing households desolating heart stones and darkening all the bright types we had cherished for the future, that God knoweth best. There is a future where death shall never come. There is no night there; nor crying, but is one bright summer always. Bland sad sorrows never come.
Written in her sister's (Rachel Mitten Short) obit on Feb. 27, 1879:
Yesterday morning, Rachael sent her last message -- "Tell Jennie to meet me in Heaven, I'm nearing the Eternal home." Jennie sent word back, "I will be there n a few days."
