I arranged for this headstone to be placed in the designated area for unmarked graves to serve as a memorial for my maternal great-great grandfather, Arthur Caraway.
Arthur was only 32 or 33 when he died in a Richmond Military Hospital as a result of disease from serving in the Civil War. We are unsure if the disease was the result of a wound (like gangrene), or was some other affliction that claimed the lives of many soldiers.

The Confederate Pyramid at Hollywood Cemetery. This 90 foot tall pyramid is made of granite stones taken from the James River in Richmond. It was erected to honor the Confederate Dead buried in this cemetery. There are approximately 18,000 Confederate soldiers buried here. Approximately 11,000 of those are the unknown dead from the Battle of Gettysburg.

Per cemetery records, Arthur Carraway or Caraway of Company C, 8th Florida Regiment, born 1830, died 10/26/1862, is buried in the Soldiers Section, but the exact location is not know. This is an overview of the area at Hollywood Cemeter (between Soldier's Section West and Section V) which is used to place modern V.A. markers for soldiers whose exact location is not known. And in the case of your soldier we find no marker. Near the fall of Richmond, casualties were brought to Richmond by trains and carts in a steady flow. Burials were hasty and marked not by name but by numbered boards which each represent a trench of burials. The only markers that exist today are markers that were placed at a later date by descendants. If you are interesting in placing a marker for him, the Hollywood Cemetery office can assist you.
