Victor was the 2nd child born to Reuben H McBrayer & Elizabeth Stroud. He graduated medical school in 1875 in New York, returning home to establish his practice. He married Esther Suttle on 28 April 1880. Having started his family, Victor purchased land from Esther's family and began building their home which still stands at 507 North Morgan St, Shelby, NC. The home is considered one of the "most important late 19th-century buildings of Shelby."
