He was an M.A. and Rector of Edlaston. He lived at The Gatehouse in Wirksworth. The Gell's were an old established Derbyshire family who originated from Hopton and they too had ventured into business and commerce from an aristocratic base. Thomas married Cassandra Lowe, daughter of Edward Lowe and Dorothy Toplis, on 28 Aug 1706. He was a surgeon. They had nine children:
