James Butler Johnson, "Papa," 87, of San Antonio,TEXAS passed away June 11, 2009. He was born on Jan. 1, 1922 in San Antonio to Rache G. Johnson and Flora Whisnant Johnson. James was a retired aircraft equipment specialist in the civil service and was a member of the Anchor Masonic Lodge. He married Hazel Whitton on July 24, 1943 and was a loyal companion to her for 66 years. In his retirement years, he enjoyed working at local sporting good stores and being with family. He passed his love of the outdoors on to all of his grand and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter Drenda Johnson Smith in September 1996. Survivors include his wife, Hazel Johnson of San Antonio, a daughter Sylvia Johnson Peterson of San Antonio and a son Tim G. Johnson of San Antonio. His life was blessed with eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren: Denise Peterson Thompson of Austin, Gregg Peterson of Pipe Creek, Jeremy, Nathan and McKenzie Johnson, all of San Antonio, David Smith of Bulverde, Cindi Smith Colbath of Seguin, Tammi Smith Gutherie of Schertz, Matthew Thompson of Austin, Makayla and Aidan Peterson of Pipe Creek, Nicole Gutherie of Schertz and a brother, Benjamin "Blue" Johnston of San Marcos. A graveside service will be Monday June 15 at 11 a.m. at Hill Country Memorial Gardens in New Braunfels. Arrangements by Doeppenschmidt Funeral Home of New Braunfels, TEXAS (830) 625-3434.
