Juanima graduated from San Marcos High School and Southwestern Texas State University, receiving a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education in 1953. She taught at schools in New Braunfels, TX, North Carolina, Glena Park, TX, and Pasadena, TX.
She married Edward O. Wendler on June 5, 1954, at the First Lutheran Church in San Marcos. In 1969, the couple founded Wendler Marine Service, Inc., a waterways transportation company that arranged for delivery of products to various locations along the Intracostal [sic] Waterway, from Texas to Louisiana, Mississippi and Florida. The company became highly successful and was the first of its kind in the Houston area. Clients included Aramco, Diamond Shamrock, Union Carbide, Rohm and Hass, Pittsburg Plate Glass, Dupont, Morgan Salt, Exxon, Shell Oil, and Dow Chemical, to name a few.
Juanima enjoyed theater, music, literature and art. She was an avid collector of watercolor and oil paintings. Being a true country girl at heart, she loved nature, enjoyed fishing, riding the tractor, gardening and sewing. Her family was very precious to her and she loved spending time with them, especially her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters, Hazel Seffel, Edith Mellon and Ella Jean Simon. Juanima is survived by her devoted husband, Edward O. Wendler; daughter Rhonda Wendler; grandchildren Melissa and Josh Ueckert; son-in-law Steve Uerckert; brothers Buddy Johnson and wife Hazel of San Antonio, and Blue Johnston and wife Charlene of San Marcos; and numerous nieces and nephews in Texas, California and New York.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, January 28, 2006 at Driftwood Cemetery, with Rev. Carl Clark officiating. Driftwood is located on FM 150 about 7 miles south of Dripping Springs, north of Wimberley, or about 20 miles southwest of Austin. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 2909 W. Holcombe Blvd., Houston, TX 77025, or the Houston Hospice at Texas Medical Center, 1905 Holcomb Blvd., Houston, TX 77030.
