He was the oldest member of the Charleston Bar when he died, having practiced law there for over 60 years. He was elected repeatedly to the state Legislature from 1837 unitl 1860.
He bought the plot in which he resides with Daniel Hardy Silcox. He was Daniel's attorney and personal friend. Daniel named his son, Daniel Seymour Silcox, who is interred in the same plot, in his honor.
