Former Wyoming Teacher Instantly Killed at Wyanet
MRS. CLIFFORD P. LADD, FORMERLY MISS PLESSIE MOZINGO, CATAPULTED OUT OF CAR; SISTER ALSO INJURED.
Mrs. Clifford P. Ladd of New York City, formerly Miss Plessie Mozingo of Wyoming, was instantly killed near Wyanet Sunday noon, when the car in which she was riding left the pavement, crossed a ditch, crashed through a fence, and overturned in a cornfield. Mrs. Ladd was riding in the rumble-seat of the car and was thrown out on her head with terrific force, death being instantaneous.
Mrs. Ladd's sister, Mrs. Franklin Barrow of Oak Park, Ill., suffered a broken collar bone, a fractured shoulder and three broken ribs. Mrs. Barrow will be remembered in Wyoming as Miss Ardis Mozingo. The driver of the car, husband of Mrs. Ladd, escaped with minor injuries, including a severely sprained ankle, cuts and bruises. Both he and Mrs. Barrow were removed to the Perry Memorial hospital at Princeton, and a number of relatives from Wyoming and community called at the hospital Monday.
Mr. and Mrs. Ladd had been visiting with Mrs. Barrow at her Oak Park home for several weeks, and Mr. Ladd had recently purchased a new Nash coupe. Mr. and Mrs. Ladd and Mrs. Barrow left Oak Park Sunday morning for Sycamore, Iowa, and were accompanied as far as Mendota by Mr. Barrow and a little son.
At a point near Wyanet on Route 7 Mr. Ladd passed a car going in the same direction. The Ladd car was traveling at a high rate of speed as it passed the other machine and the driver evidently lost control of his machine as he attempted to swing back into his own lane to avoid striking an approaching car. After passing down a steep embankment, the Nash coupe crashed through a fence and into a cornfield, finally turning over, front end down. As the rear end of the car went into the air Mrs. Ladd, who was riding in the rumble-seat, was catapulted head foremost into the air. She was frightfully bruised about the head and body.
An inquest was held Sunday afternoon, the verdict of the jury being that Mrs. Ladd "came to her death from a fractured skull of the right temple region received in an auto accident on Route 7, in Wyanet township, about noon, August 27, 1933.
Mrs. Barrow's condition was considered critical for a time, but relatives who visited the hospital Monday stated that she will recover, although she is suffering much pain.
Funeral services will be held at Oak Park, Ill., Thursday afternoon, and will be attended by Mr. and Mrs. T. F. Miller and daughter Mrs. J. T. Wead, of Wyoming. Mrs. Ladd was a niece of Mr. Miller, Mrs. Watson Egbert of Toulon, Mrs. A. J. Adams of Springfield, and T. L. Miller of Kewanee.
Mrs. Ladd made her home in Wyoming for a number of years, first serving as a teacher in the North Side grade school and later in the old South Side school. While a resident of Wyoming she made her home with her aunt, the late Mrs. A. B. Hoff. Mrs. Ladd is also survived by two brothers, Harley of California and John of Iowa, both of whom are former teachers in the North Side grade school.
