Thomas C. McCulloch was born 8 April 1823 in Allegheny Township to James and Margaret (Patterson)McCulloch. He attended attended the common schools and then at age seventeen he entered the Freeport, Armstrong County, Academy graduating at age eighteen. He then taught school in Westmoreland County for three years. He was paid $20 per month. He then attended Oberlin College for a year.
In 1845 he began the study of medicine under his brother Dr. William P. McCulloch's instruction at Apollo, Armstrong, PA. He attended Jefferson Medical College during the 1847-1848 session and then practised with his brother until 1853 when he re-entered Jefferson Medical College from which he graduated. He was in practise with his brother for another four years when he moved to Kittanning where he practised medicine for 21 years. In 1877 he was induced to settle in Oil City.
He married Mary Elizabeth James of Freeport 20 September 1852. They had six children. Thomas McCulloch suffered a stroke while in church and died several days later. Funeral Services were at the First Presbyterian Church on June 19th.
Thomas was the first captain of the Independent Blues of Apollo, a volunteer militia company, in 1848. He served in the council at Kittanning, and was a member of the Oil City Medical Club, Venango Medical Society, and the American and Pennsylvania State Medical Associations.
