They had 4 daughters and 5 sons.

Cabin boy on Allegheny River boats: Bridgewater and the Pinta.

Captain of boat:Hail Columbia on Wabash River.

1850's owned shares in the boats: Red Fox and Conestoga

1858 Speculated in oil before the Civil War. Shipped/dealt and profited in oil, Oil City, Pa DURING the Civil War-Founded Vandegrift,Forman & Co. with George W.Forman.

1868 expanded into laying Pipelines(these interest consolidated as United Pipe Lines-1877 then merged into National Transit Co.)

1872 Instrumental with laying of 1st Important Natural Gas Line.

1884 Established Imperial Refinery.
1886 Principal investor in purchase of Apollo Iron and Steel Company

1895 Forest Oil Co. (founded by Jacob Vandergrift-then part of Standard Oil) leased 700,000 acres of promising oil lands in Kansas and Indian territories which became neucleus of Great Mid Continent Field of the 20th Century.

Invested in banks, gas co's, iron/steel/real estate.
Endowed an orphanage, aided churches and hospitals.

On 12/26/1899 he went to work in his office as usual,finished at 12 noon, returned home, and was found dead later that evening.
