Daniel Connor was born in Newcastle upon Tyne 1832. He arrived in Western Australia on the 31 August 1853 aboard the Phoebe Dunbar as a convict. After living here for just 4 years he married Catherine Conoway on 16 January 1859 in the town of Fremantle. Catherine Conoway, who was also of Irish descent, arrived in Australia 13 January 1853 aboard the Travancore.
Although not much is known about his early life we do know that 20 June 1850 he was sentenced to seven years prison for trying to steal sheep. He had served over half his sentence when he was sent to Western Australia. On the ship he was very well behaved and helped out as much as possible. His sentence being almost competed he was granted a ticket of leave11 August 1854.
During his life he had 7 children with Catherine. Theresa born 1864-1904, Michael born 1870, Mary Angela born 1873, Daniel Edward born 1866, Monica born 1868, Bernard Maurice born 1870, Gertrude Blanche born 1876-1878.
He sent his sons back to Newcastle for University education but his daughters remained behind and (those who survived childhood) were eventually married.
Throughout his time in Western Australia he maintained a variety of different occupations including being a merchant, miller, pastoralist, financier, gentleman and a shopkeeper. He was clever in investing in properties and managed to buy the property on both sides of a road. Unfortunately, upon is death, his borrowing had to be repaid. His estate lost a total of 106,551 due to debt which left his heirs only 76,583.18 of wealth (money + assets).
