Sarah was born in Nayland, Suffolk, England and baptised there on February 8, 1632/3. She was the daughter of Gregory and Lydia Stone. Lydia was a widow with two other children at the time of her marriage to Gregory, about 1627. Gregory's Puritan beliefs probably caused him to take his family to New England about 1635. They settled first in Watertown, Massachusetts, but removed to Cambridge in 1637. Sarah married in Concord, on July 12, 1653, Joseph Merriam. They lived in Concord for a time, but moved to that part of Cambridge that later became Lexington. Sarah and Joseph were the parents of nine children. Joseph died at a relatively young age, on April 20, 1677, in Cambridge. He is buried in the Hill Burying Ground in Concord. Sarah lived many more years and died on April 5, 1704. She is buried in the Old Burying Ground in Lexington. She may have moved to Lexington to live with one of her children.
