Joseph was born in Kent, England, probably in Tudeley, about 1630. He was the son of Joseph Merriam and Sarah Goldstone. His father was a prosperous businessman in the clothing trade. In 1638, the family left England and settled in Concord, Massachusetts. His father died suddenly in January of 1640, but left a large enough estate to bring up his children.

Joseph married Sarah Stone, the daughter of Gregory Stone and Lydia Fiske Cooper Stone. They were married July 12, 1653 (Concord Vitals), and lived in Concord for a time, but moved to that part of Cambridge that later became Lexington. Joseph died in Cambridge at only 47 years of age. His tombstone in Old Hill Burying Ground is the oldest gravestone in the cemetery. His widow Sarah lived many more years and died in 1704.

Children (from Kevin Avery): Sarah Meriam, Lydia Meriam, Joseph Meriam III, Elizabeth Meriam Ward, John Meriam, Mary Meriam Stearns, Robert Meriam(husband of
Abigail Cutler Meriam), Ruth Meriam Stow, Thomas Meriam, David Meriam, and Jonas Meriam.
