Alex B. Sonski, 87, of Somersville, Conn., passed away at home after a short illness on Tuesday, June 28, 2011.
Born on Jan. 22, 1924, in Somersville, Alex was the son of the late Longin and Antonia Sonski. He lived in the tobacco valley until enlisting in the United States Army in 1943, where he served in both Germany and the Philippines. As a pilot in the Army Artillery, Alex cultivated a lifelong love of flying. After returning from the war, he enrolled at Hillyard College, where he received an associate's degree in engineering in 1948. Alex, along with his brothers Albin and
Peter, went on to form Sonski Bros. Inc. in 1949, and together they built many homes throughout the Bloomfield and West Hartford areas. In 1947, attending a dance at the Polish Club in Thompsonville, Alex was introduced to Susan Howe, who became his dance and life partner. They married on Oct. 15, 1949.
Susan survives Alex, along with their four children, Mary Getman of Somersville, Alex Sonski of Washington, D.C., Alice Petronio of Newington, and Cynthia Sonski of Windsor; in addition to many grandchildren. Alex loved his family dearly, and "Grandpa Al, the kids' pal" will be sorely missed.
The funeral will be held 9:30 a.m. Friday, July 1, from the Somers Funeral Home where a procession will form for a 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at All Saints Church in Somersville. Committal with military honors will follow at St. Bernard's Cemetery.
