Obituary:

MRS. MARY CULBERTSON.

The silent reaper has again invaded the fast thinning ranks of the old settlers of this section, and has taken from our midst, Mrs. Mary Culbertson, formerly of Douds, Iowa, but who for the past few months has made her home with a daughter at Brookfield, MO. Mrs. Culbertson was a woman of remarkable sprightliness both in body and mind, for one of her years. She was a constant reader and had the power to retain what she read. She arose early and used the early morning hours for the perusal of her Bible, which had been the comfort and guiding light of her long and arduous life: "Come quickly" it found her fully prepared, as she possessed an unwavering faith that never shrank "though pressed by every foe". In her early life she became a member of the Presbyterian church, which was always her church home when she could conveniently attend.

When it was impossible for her to attend her own church, she did not hesitate to add her presence and influence with the nearest gathering of God's people of what ever denomination. The deceased was born in Brooks County, Va., Sept. 27, 1826. In the year 1843 she removed with her parents to Keokuk, Iowa, coming down the Ohio river on a keel boat of her father's construction, thence up the Mississippi river by steamboat to Keokuk, where they made their home until 1859.

From there she removed with her father's family to Van Buren county, settling near Birmingham. She was united in marriage to Wm. Culbertson, Nov. 28, 1861, with whom she lived happily for over 40 years. Since the death of her husband, which occurred Dec. 1, 1901, she has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. T.E. Miller of Brookfield, Mo., where she died, July 19, 1903, being at the time of her death 76 years, 9 months and 22 days old.

She is survived by on son, four daughters, six brothers and one sister.

The funeral services was held at the home of Geo. R. Rambo, who occupies the family home at Douds. The services was conducted by the Rev. H.A. Ingham of Keosauqua. Interment was by the side of her husband at Mt. Moriah Cemetery. Truly it may be said of her, "She hath done what she could."
