Obituary:
Thomas Wycoff, for many years a resident of Winfield, passed away this morning at 10 o’clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Will Alexander on East Ninth avenue. Mr. Wycoff had been in failing health for several years, but only last Friday was taken critically ill, suffering a stroke from which he never regained conscious. Mr. Wycoff was a good citizen, highly respected by all who knew him.
Thomas Wycoff was born May 8, 1838, near Pittsburg, Alleghaney county, Pennsylvania, and died in Winfield, August 23, 1923, aged 85 years, 3 months and 15 days. When a boy he came with his parents to Keokuk, Iowa, where he worked at his trade as machinist.
He was married to Margaret J. Young at Birmingham, Iowa, March 27, 1862. Nine children came into the home with the passing of the years, James P. Wycoff and Hanna L. Smith of Tonkawa, Okla., Elizabeth E. Ingram, of Enid, Okla., Newton Y. Wycoff of Indianola, Iowa, Lottie M. Alexander, Cornelius S. Wycoff and Esther M. Stout of Winfield, Arthur P. Wycoff of Dallas, Texas, and Orange E. Wycoff of Kingman, Kans., all whom survive.
He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church since boyhood, always regular in attendance and support of his beloved church. With his wife he held daily family prayers all through the years from his children’s earliest recollection. The came to Kansas in the fall of 1879 where they proved up a claim and built their home near Milan, Kansas, at which place he was superintendent of the Sunday school for many years.
They came to Winfield in the fall of 1894, where they have since resided. He with his good wife, who preceded him in death October, 1913, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, March 27, 1912. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 3:30 at the First Methodist church, Rev. I. D Harris pastor of Grace Methodist church will be in charge. Burial will b e made in the family lot in Union Cemetery.
