Sgt. Sean R. Mitchell, 24, of RD 2, Youngsville, Warren Co., and Fort Riley, Kansas, died Wednesday (March 31, 2004) in the city of Habbaniyah, Province of Alanbar, Iraq, while conducting combat operations.

He was born Sept. 4, 1979, in Warren, the son of Edward and Danielle Christie Mitchell of Dunns Eddy.

A 1997 graduate of Youngsville High School, he earned an associate's degree in business administration from Jamestown Business College in 1999.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army on Nov. 17, 1999, and in April 2000 was stationed at Fort Riley, assigned to the First Engineer Battalion.

He served as a hazardous material driver and team leader in a combat engineer squad from August to December 2001, deployed with Bravo Company to Kuwait in support of Operation Desert Spirit.

In September 2003, he was deployed with Bravo Company in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

His awards and decorations include the Good Conduct, National Defense Service, Armed Forces Expeditionary and Global War on Terrorism Service Medals; also, the Army Service Ribbon and Drivers Badge.

He wasn't just a soldier, he was a proud husband and son.

Surviving besides his parents is his wife, Denise Jordan Mitchell, whom he married Sept. 20, 2000, in Junction City, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, James and Charlotte Christie; and his paternal grandmother, Rae Mitchell.
