Rebecca Fischer, 18, of Hartington died Saturday at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. She was injured about 3 a.m. Friday when she was ejected from the car she was a passenger in as it went around a curve near 197th Road and Custer Road and rolled several times.
Sunday would've been Fischer's 19th birthday.
Fischer and MaKenzie Leonard, 18, of Valentine were transported to the hospital after the crash. The driver, Cody Nilson, 20, of Kearney and another passenger, Reed Jablonski, 20, of Fleming, Colo., were uninjured.
Leonard was treated for her injuries and released.
Late this morning, Nilson was charged in a Buffalo County warrant with felony motor vehicle homicide while driving under the influence of alcohol. He was arrested and jailed on suspicion of DUI and minor in possession of alcohol after the crash.
Fischer was a freshman at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Nilson also is a UNK student.
Sunday night, counselors from UNK's Counseling and Health Care office met with students at Centennial Towers West where Fischer lived.
LeAnn Obrecht, director of Counseling and Health Care at UNK, said counselors provided assistance to students at the meeting and also are available 24 hours a day at 865-8248.
"They were affected as anyone would be," Obrecht said. "They were supporting each other and handling it well.
"This is a tragedy. My heart just goes out to them," she added.
According to court records, Nilson had an MIP conviction in Buffalo County in April 2011. He served two days in jail, paid a fine, and completed six months probation and a drug and alcohol education class for the offense.
Funeral services for Fischer will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hartington. Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Tuesday at the church with rosary at 4 p.m. and a vigil service at 6 p.m.
Visitation also will be one hour prior to services at the church. Wintz Funeral Home of Hartington is in charge of arrangement.
