Amos Whitten ("A. W.") Rogers, Sr. was born on June 2, 1875 in Prosperity, West Virginia. He was the 6th of 9 children born to James Oliver Rogers and Cornelia Jane Strader.

Amos married Elizabeth "Lizzie" May Weis on February 12, 1895 in Montgomery County, Virginia.

From late 1895 to 1919, they bore 12 children: 5 sons and 7 daughters. Three of their children did not reach adulthood. John Franklin Rodgers and Eva Gay Rodgers died in infancy, and their daughter Gertie died of tonsillitis at the age of 9.

At the time of the 1900 US Federal Census, Amos and Lizzie were renting a home in Mount Hope, West Virginia. Amos is listed as a Planning Mechanic. By the 1910 census, Amos and Lizzie owned a home in Mount Hope, WV, and Amos was employed as a carpenter. By 1920, Amos owned his own construction business.

According to his WWI Draft Registration Card dated September 12, 1918, Amos was the Manager of Rodgers' Construction Company. He is also described as tall with red hair, blue eyes with one disfigured eye.

Based upon a 1922 report by the Bureau of Labor, Rodgers Construction Company had 20 male employees.

Amos' youngest son, Amos Whitten Rogers, Jr., wrote "My father was a building contractor and built many homes in and around Mount Hope. He filed for bankruptcy in 1926. In 1927 my father was diagnosed as having cancer of the spleen."

Amos died at home on May 26, 1928 in Mount Hope, West Virginia. He was 52 years old. The funeral took place at his home in Mount Hope, West Virginia.
