Franklin Deuel Skeel, known as Frank, was the second of six children born to the Rev. Harlow B. Skeel (1824-1909) and his wife Lucy L. Deuel Skeel (1824-1905). His father was a much-beloved minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church, serving in churches across upstate New York. Frank attended Wesleyan University, graduating with B.A. and M.A degrees in 1878. He then trained as an allopathic physician at New York University Medical College, receiving his M.D. in 1881. He established a successful practice in Bedford Hills, Westchester Co., NY and New York City. On December 7, 1882 Frank married Mary Augusta Robertson (1855-1927) of Westchester Co. The couple had one son: Henry Robertson Skeel (b.1885).
