Thomas De Lacy had a race track on his farm near Retreat. I knew it as
the Davenport place, it was just across the field from where we lived on
the old Henry De Lacy place.
Thomas De Lacy was born on the 5th day of December, 1841, in the county
of Perth, Ontario, Canda. He was a son of Patrick and Elizabeth Turner
De Lacy. He died on the29th day of December, 1915, at the city of
Prairie du Chien, Crawford county, Wisconsin.
He came in the spring of 1858 with his parents to Columbus, Iowa, and in
1859 removed to De Soto, Wisconsin. During the Civil War he enlisted in
the 31st Wisconsin Infantry and served for two years and eleven months.
On November 19th, 1865, he was married to Elizabeth Rutter Rolfe, of the
town of Freeman, Crawford county, Wisconsin. They lived on a farm in the
town of Freeman from the time of their marriage until the fall of 1904,
when they removed, to Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, where Thomas De Lacy
went to fill the office of county treasurer, to which office he had been
elected that fall. In the fall of 1906 he was re-elected for a second
term and served his constituency faithfully during the rime of his public
life.
He served his town for several years in his capacity as chairman of the
town and a member of the county board. Since he retired from the office
of county treasurer, he has served his ward in the city of Prairie du
Chien as a member of the city council and also as a supervisor on the
county board, which he was still holding at the time of his death, having
served at the last session of the board.
On November 19th,1915, Mr. and Mrs. De Lacy quietly celebrated the golden
anniversary of their marriage. The poor health of Mr. De Lacy alone
deterred his multitude of friends from celebrating the day with them as
they wished. During the last summer Uncle Tom has been poorly and his
time seamed near, but to the surprise and gratification of his relatives
and friends he recovered sufficiently to be able to get out and visit his
friends and to attend every session of the county board. Since then he
gradually failed and peacefully departed this life December 29,1915.
Mr, De Lacy is survived by his beloved wife, Elizabeth Rutter Rolfe De
Lacy, and numerous relatives. He is the last of a family of fourteen
children, and was respected where ever he was know. Prairie du Chien
Courier.
