Mario was born in Lucca to Arnoldo Piccini and Concetta Petri, both from Lucca. Arnoldo had served in Garibaldi's army.

Arnoldo and Concetta had:
Fabio, Anita, Priamo, Mario, Mazzino, Alice
Fabio and Priamo are in Cypress Lawn as well.
Mazzinio is in Holy Cross.

Mario was born in 1888. His mother was the cousin to the composer Giacomo, and Mario spent time at Giocomo's home in Lucca during the summers, and broke bones on three occasions falling while climbing trees at the Villa.

At the age of 17, in 1905, Mario and Priamo came to the US, and traveled to San Francisco. They were present at the 1906 quake. Many refugees of the quake were sent to Chicago. Mario and Priamo worked in the stockyards. Priamo became ill with pneumonia, and when he was well enough to travel, they returned to San Francisco. IT was about this time that they joined the Wobblies, Industrial Workers of the World (IWW).

Mario had several jobs, including Alaskan fishing, a lumberjack, window cleaner.

After the Preparedness Day Parade Bombing in 1916, many radicals were rounded up and jailed, including Mario, his brother Priamo and their friend Luigi Parenti. Luigi's niece was used to bring messages in and out of the jail, and this is how Mario met Cari. They had a daughter, Russia in 1920.

Mario became ill with tuberculosis, and the family moved to Walnut Creek where Mario's brother Fabio lived, and Mario managed the restaurant where Fabio was a cook. He had a concussion from an accident in a Ford Model T, causing dizziness for years afterwards.

In 1924 Mario was clear of TB, and the family returned to San Francisco, getting a flat on Telegraph Hill.
