Rita B. Bethea, of North Myrtle Beach, died Saturday at Grand Strand Healthcare.
The funeral will be at 7 p.m. today at McMillan-Small Funeral Home, the Rev. Christopher Carlisle officiating. Private burial will be in North Myrtle Beach Memorial Gardens.
Bethea was born Feb. 17, 1924, in Meade, Kan., daughter of the late Stacey and Beulah McCormick Burns. She came to North Myrtle Beach in 1977 from Lumberton. Bethea was a member of Ocean Drive Presbyterian Church in North Myrtle Beach and was active in the choir there. She had worked in the commercial loan department of NBSC. She was a member of the Pilot Club of Myrtle Beach and the Community Chorus, as well as a volunteer with the North Strand Helping Hand.
She was preceded in death by her first husband and father of her children, Matthew James Atkinson IV, in 1981, and her second husband, Col. William T. Bethea Jr. M.D. in 1995.
Surviving are a son, Matthew James Atkinson V, of Boone, N.C.; two daughters, Linda Foxworth of Chapel Hill, N.C. and Suzanne Suthers of Murrells Inlet; two sisters, Joyce Grimes of Sun City West, Ariz., and Phyllis Broadie of Manhattan, Kan.; four stepchildren, William T. Bethea III of Mandeville, La.; Julie Bethea Eckert of Myrtle Beach, Margaret Bethea McHenry of St. Michaels, Md., and Andrew David Bethea of Little River, S.C.; 7 grandchildren; and 10 step grandchildren.
