POLIO IS FATAL TO SPOKANE MAN

James Garvey, 33, E202 Euclid, died today at St. Luke’s Hospital, where he had been ill for more than a week with bulbar polio.

Mr. Garvey was stricken two weeks ago today and was hospitalized September 29. He had been in a respirator several days.

Winnifred McPherson, city health department record clerk, said today Garvey’s death was the 15th in the city this year caused by polio.

Nine of the victims were residents of Spokane, and six were from other places in the Inland Empire, Miss McPherson said.

Mr. Garvey was born in Three Hills, Alberta, Canada, where his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bert D. Garvey, now of Spokane, homesteaded in 1906.

He was a member of the Hillyard Baptist Church and an employee of the Merry Sales Company.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Lorraine J., and four children, Dean Lloyd, Barbara Lorraine, Diane and Thomas, all at the home.

The body is at Hazen & Jaeger’s.

--From the Spokane Daily Chronicle; Friday, October 10, 1952 He was born James Albert Garvey in Canada, where his U.S.-born parents had moved to homestead. The family returned to the United States in 1929. He was naturalized in 1942, at which time he changed his middle name to Lloyd.

James died of polio, leaving his wife Velma Lorraine (Jacques) Garvey (1919-2007). James and Lorraine were married in Spokane on June 15, 1940. They had five children: two sons and two daughters who survived him; another daughter Susan was born after his death but only lived one day.

James was a member of the Hillyard Baptist Church.
