Thomas McCort one of the eldest and most respected citizens of Carroll County, died Friday morning at 2:40 o'clock at his home on High Street. His ailment was uremic poisoning and heart trouble. He was born February 5, 1831, in Union Twp., this county and was the son of James and Ann (Fawcett) McCort. He was united in marriage with Mary Jane Griphy, August 29, 1854, and to their union were born ten children; one of these died in infancy--all the others gathered from their scattered homes to comfort their mother and attended the funeral. Eugene W., James W., Lincoln A., and Mrs. Howard B. Semple live in Pittsburgh; Charles T., in Coshocton; Frank G. in Alliance; Mesdames Ada C. Kirby and Charles Swain in Mansfield and Mrs. Howard B. Runyan of this city. There are ten grandchildren.
Of deceased's parental family there were two boys, be being the youngest, and five girls of whom three are living; Mrs. Letia Dobbs of Cleveland, Mrs. Elizabeth Capper of Union Township, and Mrs. Dollie Crim of Golden City, Missouri. He was a farmer and lived all his life in this county. Born and reared in Union Twp. he lived there until he was 41 years of age; then went to the Baxter farm in Centre Township where he lived from 1872 to 1890, after which he moved to Carrollton.
In public life Thomas McCort enjoyed the confidence of the community at large and shared their honors. He was infirmary director two terms, justice of the peace in Union Township, trustee of Centre Township, and later assessor. His official duties he discharged with credit to himself and to his constituents. When he was 27 years old he united with the M. E. Church at Pleasant Hill under the pastorate of Rev. Harmount and remained steadfast in that faith to the end. Like a Christian soldier he ever ready for duty. On Tuesday at 1 o'clock his funeral service was conducted by Rev. C. W. Harshman, the M. E. pastor, after which interment in Grandview. The bereaved widow, whose home will be broken up after a companionship of over 53 years, will have the sympathy of the community.
