The son of John & Sarah F. (Eberly) Heicher, he was orphaned by 1862 and is not found in either the 1850 or 1860 census but presumably was still living in or near Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the overstated age of eighteen in Harrisburg February 7, 1865, mustered into federal service there February 10 as a private with Co. C in the one-year organization of the 192nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 24, 1865.

He married Anna J. "Jennie" Heckman and fathered Sarah Viola (b. 07/19/69 - married a Pugh), Marion Vieva (b. 10/05/76 - married Charles McClellan Forney), Henry H. (b. 07/21/72), Edna Grace (b. 06/23/83 - married Anna Jeanette Bubb), and Reba Lorraine (b. 02/14/87 - married Harry Koons Peters). He later worked as a boatman and a green grocer.
