Jonas Youker was born in Oppenheim, NY to Johann "George" and Catherine (Burkdorf) Youker. His father was a War of 1812 veteran that moved the family to Jerusalem, Yates County, New York and later to Harrison Valley, Potter County, Pennsylvania. Jonas married Sally Kibbe in Potter County, having 3 children. Sally died of small pox in 1861. Shortly after this time Jonas moved to Grand Traverse County, Michigan. He remarried Eliza J. Carr Phelps on April 14, 1867 and had two children from this marriage.
Jonas' parents, some siblings, and his older children also relocated to Michigan in time. A brother, Rev. George W. Youker was an active Methodist pastor.
