Coffie Maynard "C.M." Chitwood was born on Nov. 2, 1879 in Winfield, Scott Co., Tennessee. He was the son of James G. Chitwood (1840-1916) and Rebecca Reed (1843-1906). Coffie, a school teacher, was the seventh of their eight known children.

Coffie's father James was the son of Joel Chitwood (1812-1884) and Elizabeth Trammell (1826- ?). Joel was born in Chitwood, Scott Co., TN and died in Scott Co., TN.

Coffie's mother Rebecca Reed (1843-1906) was the daughter of Campbell County "C.C." Reed (1820-1886) and Martha Ann "Patsy" Chitwood (1820-1901). Both of Rebecca's parents were born in Campbell Co., TN and died in Scott Co., TN.

On July 31, 1904 Coffie married Viola Rose Griffith (1884-1981), a native of Scott Co., TN. She was the daughter of Daniel Corbin Griffith (1847-1905) and Rosetta Pemberton (1854-1906). Both of Viola's parents were born in Glenmary, Scott Co., TN and died in Winfield, Scott Co., TN.

Coffie, a school teacher, and Viola were married for nearly 43 years and had eight known children. In order of their birth their known children were Lois Chitwood (1905-1967), Beatrice Leona Chitwood (1907-1994), Agnes Chitwood (1909-1995), Lloyd Clay Chitwood (1912-1978), Iris Chitwood (1916-2000), Ivolene "Top" Chitwood (1923-1998), Imogene "Jean" Chitwood (1924-1998) and Poindexter Chitwood (1930-1941).

Coffie died on May 4, 1947 in Winfield, Scott Co., TN at the age of 67. He was buried in the Chitwood Cemetery, now called Hensen Cemetery by some, in Winfield. His wife Viola died many years later in 1981 and she too, was buried in the Chitwood Cemetery. She was 97 years of age.
