In 1890 Nels was carried home dead from a nearby farm, where he had been helping with the harvest. He was only nineteen when he fell victim to a senseless shooting by the nine year old son on this farm. The threshing crew had been demonstrating or trying out guns and someone carelessly left a loaded gun out when they went towards the house for noon lunch. The nine year old unobserved picked up the gun,and pulled the trigger across the yard where Nels stood. Nels fell dead, after saying "Someone shot me".
