JOHN H. KENNEDY
John H. Kennedy was born Jan. 22, 1835 in Marcer county, Pa., and died Aug. 14, 1922 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. H. A. Clawson, 941 Alabama St., Lawrence, Kansas.
He spent his early manhood in western Pa., receiving the education of the common schools and academy of the day. In the academy at Poland, Ohio, he was a classmate of the late President William McKinley.
Mr. Kennedy was married Aug. 30, 1860 to Margaret E. Mounts, who died in June of the present year. The outbreak of the civil war curtailed the educational plans of both of the young people. The husband hurried back from Iowa and enlisted in Company H, 134 Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers. He was in some of the hardest fought battles of the Civil War.
In 1881 the family moved to Kansas and finally settled near Quenemo. In 1906 they migrated again, this time settling at San Juan, New Mexico, which was then the frontier. For the last two years, Mr. Kennedy lived in Lawrence, Kansas. He was an Irishman of a cheerful and benevolent disposition, upright in his dealings and relationships. His fraternal membership was with the Masons and A.O.U.W. Of the latter order he was reputed to be the oldest member in the state.
The surviving members of the family are Mrs. J.H.A. Clawson, Lawrence, Kansas; Charles and Clara L. Kennedy of San Jon, New Mexico.
Interment was made in the family plot, Oak Hill cemetery, Quenemo, Kans., Wednesday, August 16, 1922.
