__Samuel L. Kennedy, aged 74, a resident of Cedar Rapids since 1879, died late Thursday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John McCune, 1412 North 5th street
west. The death of Mr. Kennedy takes from the community one of the real veterans of the Civil War, a veteran who had had a remarkable record as a soldier for the Union during the civil strife of the early sixties. Mr. Kennedy was born in Pennsylvania in the year 1844 and came to Iowa in 1860. He enlisted in the Union army in 1863. He re-enlisted on January 5, 1864. He was severely wounded in the head July 16, 1864, at Tupelo, Miss. He was promoted to corporal, March 1, 1865, and was mustered out of service January 20, 1866, at Memphis, Tenn. He came to Cedar Rapids in 1879 and has made this city his home until his death. he was a charter member of T.Z. Cook Post 235 G.A.R. He was also a member of the Bethany Congregational church for several years.
__He is survived by two sons and four daughters, Lizzie McCune and Jennie Oswald of this city, Lura Arnolds of Seattle, Wash., Charles Kennedy of Mitchell, S.D., and Emma Nye, and Samuel Kennedy of this city. He is also survived by two sisters, Emma Cris of Oklahoma and Sadie Oscar of California.
__The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 from the Bethany Congregational church on L avenue and Sixth street, west. The services will be in charge of the G.A.R. Interment will be made in Linwood cemetery.
