Sampson had firey red hair but a gentile spirit. He was one of the famous Tyron County committee which controled the military operations of New York State. He held the distinction of being the first man west of the Hudson River at whom a shot was fired in the Revolutionary War.He was fired at by Johnson's Rangers. He was in the Exempt Guards. He was a member of the Committee of Safety for Tryon Co, NY and was one of the builders of the Caughnawaga Church.

All of his daughters(7) married men who fought in the Revolutionary War. This was done according to his wishes.
