M. A. Bodenstein Pioneer Merchant Dead

M. A. Bodenstein, 67, well known throughout Sheboygan county and vicinity, and one of the pioneer merchants of this city, died at 10 a.m. today at his home, 624 Niagara Avenue.

In the clothing business on N. Eight Street for 53 years, Mr. Bodenstein was one of the most prominent business men of Sheboygan, and the friends and acquaintances he made through his business associations and his personality are many.

The death of Mr. Bodenstein came as a decided shock to the community today. Despite his many years in business, Mr. Bodenstein still took an interest in the store on N. Eight Street and was there almost daily.

Early today Mr. Bodenstein stated that he was not feeling well and wished to have the attention of a physician. His heart had been weak, but he had never had serious ailment before. A physician was called and it was found that Mr. Bodenstein was in a serious condition, and at 10 a.m. he passed away.

Born in Sheboygan County February 3, 1857, Mr. Bodenstein spent his youth here. He attended local school, and at the age of 14, he and his brother John became associated in the clothing business with their father, George Bodenstein who had launched the business in 1857, the year of M. A. Bodenstein’s birth.

In 1880 Mr. Bosenstein and his brother John took over the business, conducting it under the name of Bodenstein Bros.

Six years later, on June 17, 1886, Mr. Bodenstein and Miss Jennie Roenitz were united in marriage in Sheboygan. Two sons were born to them, George and Ray, and when they became of age they joined the business, and the name was changed to Bodenstein Bros. Company with Wm. Bickel also identified with the concern.

Three years ago on June 9, 1921, Mr. Bodenstein celebrated the anniversary of his entrance into business here, and his half century of business on N. Eight Street. At that time he received congratulations and commendations from his many friends throughout the county. “Metz” as he was familiarly called by his friends will be missed, for he had a genial personality and was known to both old and young. He was progressive and always believed in keeping pace with the times. Only within the last year he had remodeled the store and it is one of the very best in the section of Wisconsin. He took a great interest in the growth of the Press-Telegram and repeatedly inquired as to its circulation and

Besides his business associations, Mr. Bodenstein enjoyed prominence in the community socially. He was a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks and he was well known and highly esteemed.

Deceased is survived by his wife, Mrs. M.A. Bodenstein, two sons, George and Ray: two sisters, Mrs. H.C. Prange, Sheboygan and Mrs. William Jung, Sheboygan; one brother Adolph Bodenstein, of Streator, Ill. John Bodenstein preceded his brother in death in 1915.

Arrangements for the funeral have not been completed as yet.
