Educated in public and private schools and Notre Dame College. Entered secret service div. U. S. Army, 1861. Served through the Civil War, chiefly in the Army of Potomac; became clerk in his father's office; later with his brother, chief ass't in the agency, succeeding to the business on the death of Allan Pinkerton, July 1, 1884.
