US ARMY AIR FORCES - WORLD WAR II

WATERVILLE - Roy P. Joseph, 91, passed away suddenly on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010, at Oak Grove Center. He was born in Waterville on Oct. 8, 1918, son of John R. and Lena Ferris Joseph.


He graduated from Waterville High School in 1938 and went to work in the family-owned business, Joseph's Market. He joined the Army Air Force in 1942 where he served in the 333rd Bombardment Squadron as a corporal servicing fighter planes. After the war, he was honorably discharged and returned to Waterville to work with his brother Elias in the other family business, Joseph Motor Co. Upon his brother Johnny's death in 1946 he returned to Joseph's Market and joined brother Peter; the two owned and operated together for 40 years. It was there that he met the love of his life, Elaine, whom he married in 1946 at a double wedding ceremony with his brother Peter and wife, Pat.


Roy was predeceased by his parents John and Lena; his siblings John Jr., Elias and his wife Annie; sisters Sadie Mitchell and her husband, George, and Dianne Joseph; sister-in-law Pat Joseph, wife of his only surviving sibling, Peter P. Joseph; and son John Scott Joseph.


He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Elaine; three sons, Daniel and his fiancŽe Deb Chandler, Glenn, Kevin and his wife, Diane; daughter Jeanne Joseph-Cook; daughter-in-law Robin Thurber; grandchildren Greg, Kati, Kyle, Chris and Philip and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
