Dudley was the son of John Dew and Sarah Zane. He married Emily J. Lewis on September 18, 1865 in Nelsonville, Athens, Ohio and they had one daughter, Madge. Dudley was a Civil War veteran and was Corporal-Company G, 18th Ohio Infantry. He was wounded at the Battle of Chicamauga, Georgia on September 20, 1863.
