Shirley Gilb, the daughter of Martin and Louise (Freuchte) Meiners, was born September 29, 1923; the oldest of 10 children. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She attended country grade school near Lucan and graduated from Milroy High School in 1942. Shirley then took nurses training in Mankato and worked there and in the Marshall Hospital. On September 12, 1944 she was united in marriage to Clarence Gilb. They farmed near Lucan until they retired in 1995. They moved to Marshall in 1999. Shirley and Clarence wintered in Texas for 28 years, enjoying camping, traveling and square dancing. She baked and decorated wedding and other cakes for 30 years. Shirley was active in her church and community, holding positions as President of the Trinity WELCA, Sunday School teaching and Superintendent, Bible Study Leader, Luther League advisor, Cub Scout and 4-H leader. After moving to Marshall, she and Clarence did volunteer work at the hospital. She enjoyed baking, sewing and flower gardening. At the age of 85 years 5 months and 10 days she went home to be with her Lord. Her favorite Bible verse was Romans – 8:28 "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God and live according to His will."
Shirley Gilb is survived by her husband of 64 years Clarence, 3 sons; Ardell Gilb (Barb) of Shore Wood, Roger Gilb (Janie) of Lakeville and Dennis Gilb (Kathy) of Prior Lake, 6 grandchildren; Craig Gilb ( Laura), Todd Gilb, Sonya Gilb, Angela Wahl (Brian), Anton Gilb and Ben Gilb and 4 great grandchildren; Tyler, Taya and Coby Gilb and Kelli Gilb. Also surviving are her sisters Audrey Lawrence of Minneota, Roxanne Jensen of Hutchinson, Randee Murphy (Dan) of Sleepy Eye, Verniel Thompson of Alexandria and brothers Amber Meiners (Julie) of Coolidge, AZ, David Meiners (Becky) of Edgerton, Dean Meiners (Sandy) of Clarissa and sister-in-law Nancy Meiners of Scottsdale, AZ.
She was preceded in death by her infant daughter Arlene, daughter-in-law Dorothy Gilb, her parents and 2 brothers Gorlyn and Richard.
