Donald Earl McGarvey, 87, Davison Road, Harborcreek Township, died Monday, May 3, 2004, at Hamot Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born March 11, 1917, in Erie, son of the late Earl and Martha Vine McGarvey. He had lived in Harborcreek since 1948. He retired as a grape farmer in Harborcreek. Donald was a founding member of the National Grape Cooperative Assocation, he also was a member of the North East Fruit Growers and Pennsylvania Farm associations. He attended South Harborcreek United Methodist Church and enjoyed deer hunting.
He was prceded in death by two brothers, Howard McGarvey and Marshall "Bud" McGarvey. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Sarah Bemis McGarvey and they were married August 6, 1938. Also survived by a son, Kenneth D. McGarvey and his wife, Margaret of Erie; four granchildren, Kimberly and Brian McGarvey and Carrie and Emily Rodgers; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call Thursday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Russell C. Schmidt and Son Funeral Home. A service will be held there Friday at 11 a.m., officiated by the Rev. Larry Reitz of Sourth Harborcreek United Methodist Church. Burial will be at Wales Cemetary. Memorials may be made to the Harborcreek Fire Department, or the South Harborcreek United Methodist Church.
Donald owned and operated a grape farm in Harbor Creek since 1948 until his death in 2004. He loved his farm and his family. He loved talking about the old days and showing off his photo album to everyone. He is very much missed by his whole family. We love you!
