Bertha Peterson Mjaanes was born Feb 2, 1864 in Valestrand, Sveio Parish, Norway to Reinert and Mari (Johannesdtr) Peterson.
Bertha came to America in 1887. She married Knute Knutson on May 30, 1889 in Eagle Grove, IA. They moved several times during their marriage; to Tacoma WA, California, Rushmore MN, Nowlin SD, finally settling in Centerville SD in 1911. Ten children were born to this union.
Knute and Bertha returned to Norway in May 1920 for a three month visit staying at Skonnevik as a sister of Bertha's was living there.
Bertha was a member of Scandia Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aid. She received her elementary education in Norway.
Bertha passed away Tuesday, June 24, 1941 at about 9pm. She was 77 years of age, at the time of her death. Bertha had been a resident of Centerville for nearly 30 years.
Preceding her in death are her husband, Knute in 1931, and son Ruben Cornelius in 1908.
She is survived by nine children: Clarence and Gustav of Rapid City SD; Mrs J.F. (Ida) Long, Mrs Joe (Amanda) Olson and Mrs Isaac (Esther) Oakland of Sioux Falls SD; Conrad and Sigvold of near Centerville; Mrs Mable Buckneberg of Centerville and Bernest who lived at home.
Services were held at the Scandia Lutheran Church at 2pm, Friday June 27, 1941.
