Obituary:
Death of John Shirley
On the twenty-fourth of May, 1908, in Tustin, California, at the home of R.M. Arnold, John Shirley passed into the great beyond. Mr. Shirley was born in Morgan County, Ohio on December 15, 1823. In 1858, he moved to Arkansas where he later enlisted in the Federal Army and served with distinction and was wounded twice, carrying one bullet to his grave. In 1878 he moved to Burnet, Texas where he lived until 1899, when he moved to Hueneme, Cal. He later drifted back to Texas but was never satisfied there. He seemed to realize the end was drawing near and said that he wished to end his days in sunny Southern California. Alas, he didn't get to enjoy the pleasant climate long, as he reached Tustin on May 7th, and his oft repeated wish was fulfilled on May 24th.
Mr. Shirley leaves a wife and eleven children to mourn his death. His wife and two of his daughters, Mrs. Ralph Arnold formerly of Oxnard and Mrs. M. Howell, are in Tustin: one daughter is in Oregon and the remainder of his children are scattered around Marble Falls, Texas where he formerly lived. He lived as a consistent Christian the past fifty years, and a more beautiful example of true Christian fidelity could not be found than shown in his great suffering the past several years.
Peace to thee, then noble soldier of thy country and thy God.
