John Bommer, Sr., 81, of 931 West Third street, a retired butcher and prominent Protestant church worker, died this morning at 6:45 o'clock at the State General Hospital, where he had been admitted several hours earlier. Born in Philadelphia on May 15, 1882, the deceased was a son of the late Henry and Elizabeth (Pfromm) Bommer and had resided in this city and West Hazleton most of his life. He was a member of Emmanuel's United Church of Christ and was one of the teachers of the Stofflett Men's Bible Class of the church. In 1953, Bommer was awarded the first annual Mahlon Stewart Memorial Award for outstanding service to the Stofflett Class. The deceased served two terms as president of the Men's Federation of Bible Classes and was an honorary life member. He also taught as a guest teacher in most of the Protestant churches of the Greater Hazleton Area. He was a past president and member of the Greater Hazleton Churchmen's Brotherhood of the United Church of Christ.
Surviving are his wife, the former Gertrude Crouse; five children, Mrs. Donald (Alice) Keuch, West Hazleton; Robert, Lehighton; Mrs. Earl (Ruth) Rinehimer, Boothwyn; John H., Jr. at home; and Donald G., Dunmore. Ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren survive as well as a brother, Martin, Philadelphia. A son, Kenneth, Chicago, a former Hazleton High School basketball star, died in 1962.
The funeral will be held Monday at 10 a.m. from the Krapf and Hughes Funeral Home. Services will be conducted at 10:30 o'clock in Emmanuel's United Church of Christ with Rev. John B. Stoudt, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in St. Johns Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
