The few pieces that do exist have been provided online by the great-granddaughter of her son Edward Richard Wheat. She stated that Martha and Greenberry had both a son (Edward) and a daughter, but the daughter died young, less than 10 yrs after their marriage. It was rumored that Lara Martha (Heath) Wheat had to be committed to a mental institution in Austin, TX, but this did not turn out to be true. It was the 2nd wife (Josephine Walker) and there was a trial, 1879 in Hill County, (lunacy) in the commitment of GB Wheat's wife to the state hospital in Austin. It was his second wife, Josephine Walker, not Martha Heath. Their marriage was short so it would be easy for GB's descendants to make a mistake and say it was Martha. Looking at dates of his marriages, age of woman committed, etc. there is no doubt it was Josephine Walker. Josephine and GB were married in 1876. The trial was in 1879. GB and his third wife were not married until 1882.
Greenberry Wheat remarried a 2nd time in February, 1876 to Josephine Walker, with whom he had a daughter Lena Renda Wheat born 1877 who went on to marry 11 Sept 1896 in Hill Co TX, James Addison Cupp. This daughter Lena Renda (Wheat) Cupp) died in a tornado/cyclone in Lipscomb Co. TX in 1900.
Greenberry Wheat went on to marry a third time, on February 2, 1882 to Mary Olive Long. Greenberry Wheat died from pneumonia March 22, 1902. He and his 3rd wife are both buried in the Heath Cemetery, Huron, TX.
What year Martha (Heath) Wheat died is at this time unknown. Did she die by February 1876 since he remarried then or did they divorce As yet no one seems to know.
Their only son Edward Richard Wheat, who ran Ed Wheat's Ranch Saloon in Big Spring, TX, died on Main Street in a 'shootout' with Sheriff J.A. Baggett on November 26, 1903. He had married Lou Ella Saunders with whom he had children. He is buried in Mount Olive Cemetery, Big Spring, TX.
