James Thomas Heath was the son of Richard Blue Heath b. Aug 20 1803 Berkeley Co VA and his wife Sarah Elizabeth Jordan b. 1810 who had met and married in 1823 Cabell Co WV. The family left Virginia and moved to Tom Twp, Benton Co Mo by 1839 and moved again in spring 1846 into early Texas.

James Thomas Heath married Mary Jane Bilbo b. 12 Mar 1837 Claiborne Parish, LA. She was the daughter of John Bilbo and his wife Jane Anne Stevenson who were deceased by 1854. She and her sister were given into custody to James Dyer (who married Sarah Ann Bilbo their sister.) James Thomas Heath throughout his life went by 'Thomas.'

Four sons of Richard Blue Heath served in the Confederate Army: William Spencer Heath, Frederick G. Heath, George Heath, and James ‘Thomas' Heath. These four all volunteered with ‘Parsons Mounted Volunteers', 12th Regiment, Texas Cavalry. Its commander was Colonel William H. Parsons.
